Fans of the hapless Button family will thrill to this Civil War prequel, featuring the inimitable "Granddaddy Ike" as a boy.
"Eleven is not too young for war," Ike said to Barfoot, who swished his
tail agreeably, then lumbered to the yard table and stuck his nose in an
unattended pie.
When a steamboat arrives heralding the news that Iowa has been called up
to represent the Union of the United States of America, Ike is beside
himself with excitement. For months, the promise of war has enveloped
small-town Keokuk like a grand game that everyone’s
in on — everyone but Ike, his swaybacked pony, and his best friend and
checkers partner, Albirdie. Left behind with Mother and the aunts and
girl cousins while the Button men march forth toward glory, Ike’s fate
is sealed. Unless he can call on the ingenuity
of his fabled (some say cursed) ancestor — the adventuresome Uncle
Palmer — seek passage to Missouri disguised as a drummer boy, and meet
up with the Iowa First. But some opportunities are meant to be missed.
And some arrive when you least expect them.

The Book of Storms
Eleven-year-old Danny O’Neill has never been what you’d call
adventurous. But when he wakes the morning after a storm to find his
house empty, his parents gone, and himself able to hear the thoughts of a
dying tree, he has no choice but to set out to find
answers. He soon learns that the enigmatic Book of Storms holds
the key to what he seeks . . . but unraveling its mysteries won’t be
easy. If he wants to find his family, he’ll have to face his worst fears
and battle terrifyingly powerful enemies, including
the demonic Sammael himself.
In the beautifully imagined landscape of Ruth Hatfield's The Book of Storms, magic seamlessly intertwines with the everyday, nothing is black and white, and Danny is in a race against time to rescue everything he holds dear.

It’s not a test unless you can fail. . . .
Trouble always seems to find thirteen-year-old Julian Twerski. First it was a bullying incident, and now he’s been accused of vandalizing a painting. The principal doesn’t want to suspend him again, so instead, he asks Julian to write a 200-word essay on good citizenship. Julian writes 200 no’s instead, and so begins an epic struggle between Julian and his principal.
Being falsely accused is bad enough, but outside of school, Julian’s dealing with even bigger issues. His friend Quentin has been really sick. How can life be fair when the nicest guy in your group has cancer? Julian’s faith and friendships are put to the test . . . and the stakes have never been higher.
